I am just so excited to be a featured chef over at the Moda Bake Shop today with my newest quilt: Jellied Lone Star. Inspired by the Hopeful Homemaker’s Lone Star Tutorial. I expanded the concept to include both pre-cut jelly roll strips as well as a no Y-seam method to sew the star together!
It’s a lengthy tutorial but while at first glance it looks quite challenging it comes together so wonderfully and you’ll have a beautiful lone star medallion measuring 59″ x 59″.
My favorite part about this pattern is that it’s a traditional design revisited with a contemporary spin. That spin being no Y-seams and strip piecing rather than lengthy English paper piecing or cutting and piecing 400 individual pieces.
One thing that makes today really gratifying is that my very first quilt (which I am laying under while writing this post) was a Moda Bake Shop tutorial, so that’s really where I got my start quilting so it’s a full circle that makes me thankful for the supportive online community that cheers on each other’s successes. Jellied Lone Star was quilted edge to edge by Brenda Bergdoll at the Fabric Stash in Charlton MA.

In designing these two quilts quilt one thing I was surprised that I couldn’t find online was printable for coloring your own lone star design. After creating one to use myself to write up the tutorial I thought this would be a neat download to share with everyone!

I saw the post over at Moda Bakeshop and thought, oh hey, I know her! (Or at least your blog). Looks like a fun project. I love the colouring page idea – I always draw my patterns out on graph paper and then photocopy it to audition different colours.

Awesome colors!! What is the name of this jelly roll?
Am having a problem getting the white triangles to match up. The white triangles seem way to big. We cannot get them to look anything like the pictures! I cut an 11″ square and a 15′ square, in half. Not working! What am I doing wrong? Thank you!
