Tuesday night and last night I went home and did some sewing for the Penny Patch QAL. I think this quilt’s name is going to be Lil Miss Penny. I’m not terribly clever when naming things…
I made some decisions last night too, I am only going to do 10×10 rows, this will yield 60×60 final quilt. I’m also going to sneak in a couple farmers wife quilt blocks to replace penny patches and I’m going to replace some penny patches with 4 patch squares. Yes I’m breaking the whole design of the quilt along and ya know what, I feel good about those decisions.

Why Add Farmers Wife Blocks?
A Farmers Wife Quilt is going to be one of my next projects and I want to be able to experiment with these blocks as foundation paper piecing since I’m inexperienced with them, my only FPP is on 12″ finished blocks, very different than tight 6″ finished blocks! I’m not one to make blocks that don’t have a home and I don’t need crafty things like place mats, potholder or the such. I think it’s such a happy coincidence that the penny patch blocks are the same size.

Why replace some penny patches with 4 patches?
This quilt has a scrappy feel to it and in the QAL leader’s inspiration quilt she’s got a mix of penny patches, 6″ solids and 4 patches and I really like how that breaks up the quilt to look scrappier and less planned out. If you look at her finished Vintage Tangerine quilt it has a 4 patch opposite a penny patch in every 4 block set also I like the idea of experimenting with this quilt.
According to what’s currently on my design wall I need a few more penny patch pairs though I’ve gotten through most of them already. I’ll be in a great place to have half my penny patches and 4 batches stitched together next week to keep on schedule.

I should start thinking about what to do with this quilt. It’s pretty clear based on the palette it’s a girl quilt but I don’t have any little girls on my list of people who want quilts. This one might end up on Facebook looking for a good home or maybe as a donation to Project Linus.
Also, Can’t wait till the weekend when I can take better photos cause there will be sunlight, unlike my 10PM “it’s so dark in my living room” photos!

well, I just love everything about what you’re doing here: fabrics, colors, changes, mix-ins! i’m playing with the design, too, and have used the the 4 patch blocks, as well. this looks amazing!
Thanks! Like I mentioned I don’t usually do all prints so I figured that with this one and it’s scrappy nature I’d go big! I really do love how the more I look at this quilt the more it turns into an i-spy trying to find different quirks in it.
Looks great! Love the idea of the FW swallow block and the reason. I’ll be watching out for your FW project… may even join along as it’s been on my quilt list for over a year!
Sounds great, I’m trying to not start the FW quilt prematurely. I have one quilt to baste and quilt, this one to finish piecing, baste and quilt, two coming back from the long arm to bind int he next 2 weeks and a Quilt of Valor to do with the girls at the end of the month.
Must NOT start a new quilt…….yet…..
Hi, I’m VERY new to quilting (just completed my first quilting 101 class a few weeks ago) and I’ve been adding some quilting blogs to my daily list of blogs to read. I’ve added Stitched in Color and I came to your page from the linky party. Your project looks great! I just wondered about how you are “laying out” your quilt. It looks like you’ve got them attached to a shower curtain (?) hung on the wall? I’ve got a 1 year old, and 2 dogs. Laying anything on the floor is fair game so I’ve been trying to figure out how I can lay out my quilts to work on placement. Can you tell me how you are hanging/attaching all the pieces to the wall? Looks like a great solution to my baby/dog issue :O)
Hi Sadie welcome! I have mine laid out on a design wall from Fons & Porter 60-Inch-by-72-Inch Design Wall
and I have it hanging with 7 x 3LB 3M removable hooks. I know on one of Rachel’s posts on Stitched in Color she mentioned using the actual batting for your project I don’t have a good way to hang batting in my apartment so I prefer this design wall. Plus now my batting can stay nice and clean and the design wall can be folded up if company comes over or if I’m hiding a gift quilt for a recipient. The design wall is a lot like a plastic table cloth so you could totally use one of those instead and rig it up on the wall.

Wow, I just love how you made this quilt your own! Using the farmer’s wife blocks is ingenious and I was wondering about the original quilt–I thought it had 4 patch blocks–and I was kind of expecting the Penny Patch quilt to also. The colors are beautiful…they remind me of a fabric line from Connecting Threads called something like a Sip of Summer. It had lime, violet, and pink, but I think maybe orange too. Yours is very pretty!!!
Oh a hint of orange would have been great with these colors. One of the best things about this particular quilt pattern is that there is so much work for variation!
I like how your pop colors are so much darker than the rest. They really do pop.
